In the VOL.AT interview, Marina Hagen-Canaval (Extinction Rebellion Vorarlberg) talks about the actions in Vienna, her arrest and positive and negative reactions from the population – including video material from the capital.

After a night in the “Häfn” in Vienna’s Roßauer Lände, Marina Hagen-Canaval has no intention of quitting. But on the contrary.

In the detailed VOL-AT video interview, including excerpts from the arrest and the protest actions, the native of Lustenau gives an insight into the situation in Vienna, her personal motivation for the protest and why it is not a popularity contest, but rather the fight for survival from all of us.

“We’re not here for a popularity contest”

Hardly any movement in recent weeks and months has caused such positive and negative reactions as that of the climate activists around Extinction Rebellion, Scientists for Future or “The Last Generation”.

Marina Hagen-Canaval is also aware of this, but she also points to the urgency of the situation: “What we are doing is not a popularity contest. We are also sorry that we are disrupting people’s everyday lives. But all other forms of protest have it hasn’t been of any use so far. We have to be unmistakable and unmistakable so that politicians finally react.”

In the eyes of Marina Hagen-Canaval, the police presence in the city of Vienna is oversized.

Arrested for “improper use of the road”

The arrest followed after a protest action at Vienna’s Praterstern, in which the Ländle activist had glued herself to the street. The police presence, which was excessive for Hagen-Canaval, caused a lack of understanding, even if the officers had previously behaved according to regulations.

“Most of them are friendly and correct, a few police officers behave a little rougher. After a search, we were then taken to the Roßauer Lände police reception center, where our identity was determined. Why I then had to wait in a solitary cell for further things is beyond me, because it was an administrative offence,” the member of Extinction Rebellion Vorarlberg continues. She was accused of “improper use of the road” and taking part in or not registering and leading a political event in good time, which the police then dissolved.

“I’m not thinking of quitting, on the contrary. I don’t consider it criminal to demand a climate protection law or a 100 km/h speed limit on the autobahn,” says the native of Lustenau with self-confidence.

Mixed reactions
by the passers-by

The young woman is partly shocked by the reactions on the street. “Today a friend of ours was violently removed from a zebra crossing by a passer-by, verbally abused and also hit and kicked. But there are also more and more positive reactions from people who encourage us. For example, a lady brought a friend of me, who was sitting on the ground, tangerine slices so that she could at least have breakfast before she was taken back into police custody,” said the climate activist.
