Verónica Sarauz, wife of Fernando Villavicencio, has blamed the State and Correísmo for the death of the presidential candidate at the exit of a rally. Ecuador lives days of maximum tension after a murder that will mark the elections on August 20.
In an intense press conference, Sarauz pointed out to the State as “directly responsible” for the murder de Villavicencio and considers that “he has to give many answers” due to the lack of security measures around a candidate who had been threatened by mafias and drug traffickers. “I don’t want to think that they sold my husband so that he was murdered in an infamous way,” he concluded.
It has not stopped there. The wife of the assassinated candidate has recalled that he was a firm opponent of former President Rafael Correa and has sent a message to his people: “I want to tell correísmo that all of them are responsible, if not directly or indirectly, for the death of my husband”. Correa himself has already denied on several occasions having any relationship with these events, for which six people of Colombian nationality have already been arrested.

Despite the arrests, the Police have not yet clarified who is behind the murder. Ecuador is experiencing a serious security crisis and Fernando Villavicencio had made the fight against drug trafficking and mafias the central point of his electoral campaign. His attitude, the same one he had in his past as a journalist, led to death threats from different groups.
Meanwhile, the rest of the political formations have resumed a campaign that will culminate next 20th of August with the elections from which the new president of Ecuador will emerge. President Guillermo Lasso was forced to call the elections prematurely by being in a minority in the Assembly and being on the verge of being dismissed.
