COVID-19 threw the infectious disease playbook out the window last winter.

Instead of the typical flu season, the US endured a record combination of invasive strep infectionsgripe, RSV, enterovirus and other respiratory illnesses that competed with COVID-19 to sicken the majority of Americans at some point.

It may not be over yet.

Recently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported an increase in human metapneumovirus (HMPV) in spring. He HMPV is a respiratory virus that is related to RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) and is usually spread by coughing, sneezing, or touching surfaces that contain infected respiratory droplets.

RSV has caused about 58,000 annual hospitalizations and 100 to 300 deaths among children under 5 years of age each year in the United States.
