The Museum of Modern Art offers us, with the work of Varus remedies, a call to our imagination, a break from the routine of daily work, from the monotony of life. A jolt to visual illiteracy that “surprises us because she painted surprised”, as she said Octavio Paz.
The exhibition room will show us 31 originals, mostly in small format, except for three or four larger ones, accompanied by abundant documentation that tells us about a remedies ethereal, unattainable, hidden among slender women, with luminous eyes and musical movements or sitting weaving dreams or in a forest catching a ray of light to illuminate a hedge of roses.
remedies She was one of the first women to study at the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts, in Madrid in the 1930s. Born in Anglés, a small Catalan town in Gerona, Spain, her childhood was spent around urban architecture recognized as cultural heritage. She was starting her career when Spain was embroiled in a civil war. remedies He did not tolerate violence and left for Paris, where the swastika flags appeared parading under the Arc de Triomphe. It was then that he chose Mexico for the rest of his life. And what would his life be? Art, the unusual within a beautiful but impossible architecture, among fragile creatures, repetitive nuns, seductive princes, vagabonds who practice levitation, corridors of leafless trees. Varus remedies he teams up with a piper who builds an octagonal tower while a cat transforms into a vegetable.
A remedies That name was given to him by his mother, who had lost two children and invoked the Virgen de los Remedios, patron saint of Anglés. the hallucinating Varus remedies She never returned to Spain nor did she become a Mexican national like her friend Leonora Carrington.
In a way, his work is Mexican without resorting to cacti or nopales, reaching fabulous stages conceived by an extraordinary imagination. A bit of it can be seen in the Museum of Modern Art.
