The alleged ransomware attack on the IT service provider Materna also had an impact on the online sale of Vodafone “Callya” prepaid cards. The sale of SIM cards on Vodafone’s website was discontinued in March, shortly after Materna admitted a “professionally designed cyber attack” on the company.

“Vodafone took CallYa services provided by Materna offline a few weeks ago as a precautionary measure for the sake of system and customer data security,” a spokesman for the network operator confirmed to heise online. First, the online magazine Teltarif reported about it.

Materna was the target of a massive cyber attack in March. According to information from heise online, this is an attack with ransomware. The company does not want to confirm this, but says it has now identified the “time and angle of the attack”. The investigation into the incident is still ongoing, said a Materna spokesman.

According to a statement, the company is operational again. Employees were “equipped with newly installed or completely reconfigured systems” that “were never connected to the affected infrastructure”. The Materna homepage has been online again since last Friday.

Both companies emphasize that no outflow of customer data was found. Vodafone stated that the “restrictions on online sales and online registration of Callya products” should be removed in a timely manner. Until then, booking is possible via alternative channels.

The security incident at Materna also had an impact on the systems of numerous customers. The health insurance company BIG Direkt was not available for days or only to a limited extent. The check-in machines operated by Materna also failed at various German airports.
