Game News PS5: soon NFT at Sony?

Share :

It’s been a while since we’ve heard of NFTs: however, they are still very relevant and moreover, it seems that Sony is particularly interested in bringing them back to PlayStation. It is not yet sure, but this new index is there to testify to us.

For the payers

Some time after the madness of the famous NFTs which constantly returned to the news, it seems necessary to recall that these are far from having disappeared from the surface and that certain major players in the industry have a particular interest in them. In the world of video games, we think for example of Ubisoft (which on the other hand broke its teeth a little with its Quartz platform) or Konami, which seems satisfied with its few tokens sold, in particular with the effigy of Castlevania .

Regarding Sony, the Japanese giant has not yet entered the market, but it seems frankly curious. A quick reminder of the facts: in August 2022, a survey carried out by PlayStation surveyed players about their interest in NFTs.

Two months later, the launch of PlayStation Stars, a loyalty program for PS4 and PS5 gamers, offered digital collectibles… without these being NFTs. But, you see where we are coming from.

For some, the way seemed paved to lead to the insertion of the so-called “non-fungible token”: a theory bolstered with a patent made public last November, revealing Sony’s work on NFTs and blockchain technology. Today, another patent, even more striking, has just emerged.

PlayStation NFTs for rent?

A new patent from Sony therefore reinforces the rumor that NFTs will soon be arriving on PS5: this one presents a system where interested parties could rent NFTs representing an element of the PlayStation universe through a limited time offer. During this period, obtaining said-NFT would be displayed in the console UI.

The prices could differ depending on the status of the person, if it is a player or a spectator. Once the rental term expires, the NFT would come back into the market to be rented by other individuals. This small market would also be accessible directly from the menu of a PlayStation 5, via an interface created for the occasion.

Note that if the patent in question only appears now, it was filed on July 6, 2022: Sony has therefore been working on this idea and these technologies for a long time. Please note, there is no guarantee that the manufacturer will take action and the whole thing is to be put in the conditional. But, in any case, be sure: PlayStation NFTs are a possibility and the firm is thinking about it, or has thought about it, seriously.
