Vodafone has his Cellular analysis for 2022 released. It summarizes some interesting data from the whole year. Unsurprisingly, there is a 34% increase in mobile data usage. The record in use was again on the day of the World Cup defeat against Japan. If you compare it again with the two pandemic years, i.e. 2020 and 2021, then the duration of the phone call has decreased or the calls are becoming significantly shorter again.

With an average duration of less than three minutes, phone calls are back to pre-pandemic levels. The Vodafone network transported more than 1.8 billion gigabytes of data in Germany this year, which is a new record. On an average day in 2022, around 5 million gigabytes of data rushed through the network. There was also a peak load on February 24, 2022 – on that day Russia launched its still ongoing war of aggression against Ukraine.

According to Vodafone, in 2022 it was also found that data usage between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. was significantly higher in direct comparison with previous years. This is expected as an indication that more people are commuting to the office again and using their smartphones. Increased 5G use is also noticeable. Six times more data will be transmitted via 5G than in 2021.

By the way, there are differences between the federal states in the utilization of the mobile network. Most data (318 million gigabytes of data) flowed through the network in North Rhine-Westphalia – the least in Bremen (16 million gigabytes of data). Berlin and Baden-Württemberg recorded the largest percentage increase in data usage compared to the previous year with an increase of more than 35 percent. The smallest increase was in Saxony-Anhalt with an increase of 19 percent.

As far as the number of phone calls is concerned, there were no major differences in contrast to the length of the calls. Approximately 28 billion telephone calls were made in 2022. There is a continuing decline in the number of SMS sent: That was just over 4 million messages per day.
