The new version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – launched in December – offers a number of visual overhauls to the critically acclaimed role-playing game. However, one of the innovations that has received a lot of attention was accidentally included, and now CD Projekt RED promises to remove it.
As Kotaku reports, there is talk of realistic genitalia for several of the game’s female characters. For example, players discovered that the three forest witches known as Crones are equipped with realistic vulvas, which were not visible at all in the original The Witcher 3.
It now turns out that these came through the developer’s choice to include player-created modifications in the new version.
In a statement to Kotaku explains CD Projekt RED that it used a popular “mod” called HD Monsters Reworked (HDMR). The creator of this was compensated for the work, but what nobody caught was that HDMR had grabbed content from another modification – Vaginas for Everyone.
After being contacted by Kotaku the modder behind Vaginas for Everyone confirmed that he had been asked by the HD Monsters Reworked creator to include the realistic genitalia in his work. The message was never seen, but Vaginas for Everyone was apparently entered with the HD monsters anyway.
When contacted by CD Projekt RED, the HDMR modder failed to mention anything about the borrowed content.
– In 2021, when we signed the copyright transfer agreement, the HDMR creator confirmed to CD Projekt RED that he had created the modification on his own. The HDMR modder granted CD Projekt RED the rights to use the modification and was credited and compensated for the work. We have contacted the HDMR creator to get clarification on the matter, CD Projekt RED told Kotaku.
In the meantime, the developer has said that the vulvas will therefore be removed. CD Projekt RED points out that this must not be considered that the team is opposed to nudity or adult content, but that the change is made to create equality and better connection between all the game’s characters.
The Vaginas for Everyone creator also says that he does not care about compensation for his work.
