The volume of the abdominal circumference is directly associated with a higher risk of ischemic stroke (CVA) and cerebral hemorrhage, according to a study carried out by the University of Oxford, in the United Kingdom.

In an article published in the journal JAMA Network on December 14, 2022, researchers suggest that the population and physicians pay greater attention to controlling fat in the central region of the body as a stroke prevention strategy.

The scientists evaluated data from 490,071 adults in the UK collected over 12 years to understand whether there is an association between general adiposity – body mass index (BMI) -, central adiposity (in the belly region), and waist circumference with ischemic stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage and subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Increased waist circumference was associated with an increased risk of intracerebral hemorrhage and ischemic stroke, which happens when an artery in the brain is blocked. It was not related, however, to the risk of subarachnoid hemorrhage.

The endocrinologist at the Tivoli clinic, Bruno Babetto, who did not participate in the study, explains that until then the association of general and central adiposity with the main types of stroke was not clear. The study gives a new perspective on the subject.

Research shows that body mass index is not associated with ischemic stroke and is inversely linked to cerebral and subarachnoid hemorrhages, which are ruptures of cerebral arteries.

“These findings suggest that central and general adiposity have independent and contrasting associations with the risk of different types of stroke”, says the endocrinologist.

Babetto clarifies that abdominal fat, specifically, generates inflammation and the release of inflammatory factors that cause injury and formation of fatty plaques in the arteries, which can cause obstruction (ischemic stroke) and vessel rupture (intracerebral or subarachnoid hemorrhagic stroke).

The endocrinologist suggests that people measure their waists at home to get a sense of the real health risk. An adult’s waist should be less than half their height. “Measuring BMI is also useful, but it doesn’t take into account excess weight around the abdomen,” he clarifies.
