The health situation is worsening in Sudan, which has been plagued by deadly clashes since mid-April. A special session of the UN Human Rights Council is due to be held next week.
Between 2 and 2.5 million additional people could suffer from acute malnutrition in Sudan, bringing the total to 19 million within six months if the conflict continues, announced a UN spokesman on Friday May 5. “The World Food Program predicts that the number of acutely malnourished people will increase to between 2 and 2.5 million, increasing the total number to 19 million in the next three to six months if the conflict continues”said Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesman for the UN Secretary General.
In front of the “catastrophe” denounced for three weeks by humanitarian workers, the international community is struggling to act in organized ranks. The UN Human Rights Council will hold a special session on May 11, almost a month after the outbreak of hostilities.

This scourge of famine adds to the human disaster caused by the conflict. Clashes between General Abdel Fattah al-Burhane’s army and General Mohamed Hamdane Daglo’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have claimed around 700 lives since mid-April, according to the NGO Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (Acled ), which lists the victims of conflicts.
