Germany supports Ukraine with two types of main battle tanks. The government spokesman confirmed this on Friday.
The federal government has an export license for main battle tank of the Leopard 1 type to Ukraine. This was confirmed by government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit on Friday in Berlin, without giving any further details. So far, the federal government had only announced the delivery of the more modern Leopard 2 tanks from Bundeswehr stocks to Ukraine.
According to information from “Spiegel” it is about 29 Leopard 1 models, which have already been largely made ready for use in industry. The “Süddeutsche Zeitung” had previously reported on the planned release of the Leopard-1-Tanks reported from industrial stocks. According to the report, however, there have been problems with the procurement of ammunition so far.
Both media report unanimously that Rheinmetall and Flensburger Fahrzeugbau Gesellschaft (FFG) are building the Leopard–1 tanks and could supply them for the fight against Russia if Ukraine is interested in purchasing them.
Hebestreit did not want to comment further on the delivery of the Leopard 1 from industrial stocks. “I don’t want to say much more at the moment, that will become more concrete in the next few days and weeks.”
