Hundreds of people demonstrate for peace in Oberhausen on the anniversary of the Russian war of aggression. Mayor pledges solidarity

Alleviate the suffering of the people in Ukraine together and work for democracy, freedom and peace in the war-torn country: Oberhausen’s Lord Mayor Daniel Schranz (CDU) addressed around 500 people who had come to the city center with this appeal on Friday to demonstrate for peace on the first anniversary of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. The youth organizations of the SPD (Jusos), CDU (JU) and FDP (JuLis) had invited to the rally on Zaporishja Square, named after Oberhausen’s Ukrainian twin town.

A year ago, on February 24, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin started the illegal war of aggression against the entire Ukraine, the first rockets fired from Russia killed people and destroyed buildings. It is estimated that more than 100,000 people have lost their lives since then. Families have been torn apart, and the supply of electricity, heat and drinking water keeps collapsing in parts of the country.

With great sympathy, people recalled the great suffering in Ukraine. They prayed together, lit candles and sang the Ukrainian national anthem. They encouraged themselves not to give up hope even in the worst times of war. And strengthened the belief that one day they would be able to live in peace in their homeland again.

Daniel Schranz had taken part in the official and “very moving” commemoration at Bellevue Palace in Berlin that morning, as he told a television team on the sidelines of the Oberhausen rally. On stage, the Lord Mayor then thanked the people in his hometown who are committed to helping refugees, who support them, who make housing available and who donate. As reported, the association “Oberhausen helps” has already sent 120 tons of relief supplies to the Ukrainian twin town of Zaporizhia. The volunteers have already collected more than half a million euros for this.

The people of Zaporizhia and the whole of Ukraine can always be sure of one thing, Schranz said on Friday: the solidarity from Oberhausen. “We stand very firmly by the side of our Ukrainian friends.”
