Today, December 24, from social networks, President Gustavo Petro reacted to the Ceasefire unilateral decreed by various illegal armed groups operating in the country. The situation would serve to reach agreements during his total peace strategy. The publication has more than 174,000 views and has been shared more than 1,200 times. One of those who shared the message was Senator Gustavo Bolívar, one of his most loyal supporters.

“At this moment both the ELN, the second Marquetalia, the Central General Staff, the armed groups of the Sierra Nevada and Buenaventura have initiated a unilateral truce. We hope that true peace processes will be consolidated ”, affirmed the president from his Twitter profile.

Statements were also made from the Office of the High Commissioner for Peace. The official account of the office assured that “listening to the communities and the organizational processes, the EMC FARC declare a unilateral ceasefire until January 2, 2023. The government of Gustavo Petro remains firm in the construction of peace and awaits the appointment of the spokespersons for the dialogue”.

During the morning of Saturday, December 24, the president of the Colombians had expressed himself in this regard, via Twitter, stating that “The armed organizations that have effectively demonstrated their willingness to de-escalate violent acts should go on to select their spokespersons for the start of peace negotiations.

The message was a statement in reaction to a video broadcast by the Self-Defense Forces of the Sierra, in which they declared a truce during the end of the year:

“Conquering self-defense groups of the Sierra Nevada, information to public opinion: December 23, 2022, the conquering self-defense groups of the Sierra Nevada continue with a commitment to a ceasefire, respect for the rights of the people and committed to the total peace that promotes the national government. Through the commissioner for peace, Dr. Damilo Rueda, the conquering self-defense groups invite the general public to spend Christmas in peace, in family unity and with respect for one another”. can be heard in the video to which the president reacts.

Other armed groups that have reportedly declared a unilateral ceasefire are: La Segunda Marquetalia, led by the defector from peace, Iván Márquez; the so-called Estado Mayor Centra, dissidents of the FARC; the National Liberation Army (ELN), and a group of armed groups that are present in the city of Buenaventura.

The truce announced by President Gustavo Petro would also be joined by about 30 criminal gangs that operate in Comuna 13 of Medellín. This area, which has historically suffered from violence and crime, expects to experience a season of tranquility with the announcement of criminal gangs that could be extended in the event that they take advantage of the National Government’s Total Peace initiative.

The cessation of criminal activities was formalized through a march in which 500 people participated and which took place on Thursday, December 22. They left from the El Corazón neighborhood and concluded the tour in La Escombrera, where the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP) has carried out work to locate human remains of victims of forced disappearance in the framework of the armed conflict in the country, they reported in Week Magazine.
