"We want justice": they ask for help to clarify the crime of a Hispanic when he was leaving a party

FRESNO, California – After midnight on July 16, Simón Martínez and his wife were shot from a vehicle after an unknown person attempted to hold them up. He died while she suffered minor injuries.

Fresno police are investigating this homicide, the 19th reported in 2023, and are asking for the community’s help to solve this crime.

“This victim was not involved in any criminal activity,” Fresno Police Chief Paco Balderrama said. He was just walking to his house with his partner, he added.

Leticia Rodríguez, wife of the deceased, spoke during the police press conference. “We just want justice. My mother-in-law, my sister-in-law, me is all we want.” And she added that it has been very difficult: “My husband meant everything to me.”

The woman regretted walking home that night. Not knowing that she would be the last of her husband of three years, Simón Martínez.

Fresno police authorities are investigating a homicide that occurred shortly before 1 a.m. Sunday while leaving a party.

According to local police, Southwest officers arrived at Thorne Avenue and Geary Street to investigate a report of gunshots, which had come from an unknown vehicle.

Although paramedics performed first aid to save his life, Martinez died as soon as he arrived at the Fresno CRMC hospital.
