Stones, roof tiles and tires are ready. Trenches are dug, steel girders anchored in the ground. The activists arm Lützerath against the storm.
The protest camp in the deserted village in North Rhine-Westphalia, where “Wetten, dass ..?” winner Marten Reiß (41) lives, is to be cleared in mid-January and then dredged away for lignite.
Reiß donated part of his €50,000 prize to initiatives that wanted to prevent the demolition – apparently in vain.
Show titan Thomas Gottschalk (72) says to BILD: “Excavator bets usually work differently: the candidate bets that he won’t break anything with his excavator. It was different this time: My betting king wanted to use his winnings to ensure that no excavators rolled into Lützerath. Now they’re digging up the village. Lost bet! Pity!”
The gigantic pit reaches as far as Lützerath, police officers secure the edge. “We will make it as difficult as possible for the cops,” says an activist when BILD visits the camp.
The hooded man is just bricking up the door of a farmhouse: “There are still many surprises waiting here. We know each other a lot better here. And had time to build.”
The climate fighters still believe they can prevent the eviction. An experienced activist on BILD: “We hope for more supporters. By Monday next week we have a deal with the police that they will let everyone through to us.”
It is unclear when exactly it will be cleared. “We expect it every day,” said the activist. “We are ready. Let’s see who can last longer.”
