FIt was this Thursday, the 13th, that Jack Teixeira, 21 years old, was arrested on suspicion of disclosing confidential US military documents. The young Portuguese descendant, a member of the Massachusetts Air National Guard, will have released these documents on social networks, namely on the Discord platform.
But what is Discord anyway? It is known that Teixeira used the platform to communicate with friends with whom he interacted in a group (which he himself managed) where everyone shared a taste for video games. The vast majority of Discord’s 25 million users use the platform for the same reason – creating communities on servers with topics of common interest and communicating via text, voice or video.
In Discord it is possible to communicate with groups via public or private servers. On public servers, it is possible to communicate with unknown people and talk about common topics and points of interest. Naturally, these public servers have moderators who ensure that problematic users do not disturb the healthy functioning of the platform.
Private servers serve another purpose. These communities, which anyone with access to Discord can create, are mainly for groups of friends or acquaintances to talk to each other about the most varied topics. Given Discord’s focus on the world of video games, the vast majority use these servers to communicate while playing online games.
The authorities have not yet revealed how Jack Teixeira released these confidential documents, but it is speculated that the 21-year-old has shared them with the rest of the private server in order to impress them.
Still, the whole situation is being seen as a major embarrassment for the US and one that will require “some diplomatic reparation work”.
