White Noise has already made noise this year. Indeed, Noah Baumbach’s next film opened the Venice Film Festival last September. If some American cinemas have had the chance to screen it in a limited way, this new feature film is offered a global release on Netflix.
Originally, White Noise (Where Background noise in French version) is a novel written by Don DeLillo in 1985. The work marked the director who took it into his head to offer him an adaptation worthy of the name. It follows a dysfunctional American family in the 80s as a toxic threat hangs over their heads.
Jack is a college professor and he has an unusual overriding subject: Hitler. Married to Babette, they live in a classic American suburb with their (many) children from their respective marriages. Their routine, cradled by the background noises of everyday life, is shaken when they have to leave their house because of a toxic gas leak.
Absurd and confusing, between comedy and apocalyptic film, White Noise has all the cards in hand to surprise spectators at the end of the year.
