As we know, Europe is trying its best to preserve your data and for this reason the GAFAM are always the line of fire.
Europe wishes to protect the data of its inhabitants against the sometimes unscrupulous methods of GAFAM or even the smallest companies. We remember, for example, Discord which had been sanctioned by France a short time ago. In this context, the Meta group behind Facebook or WhatsApp is in the crosshairs of Europe through the intermediary of the Irish regulator since the international headquarters of the company is based in Dublin.
Europe glares at WhatsApp
The Data Protection Commissioner (equivalent to the CNIL in France) considers that WhatsApp is therefore guilty of violating the privacy of its users. In particular, it requires the company to reassess the way in which it uses the personal data of its users for the purpose of improving the service. For this reason, the company is ordered to pay the sum of 5.5 million euros.
Malin, the WhatsApp spokesperson has already announced that the firm will appeal this decision so as not to have to pay this sum. In September 2021, following an investigation into the GDPR, WhatsApp had already appealed a fine of 225 million euros (much bigger).
As the newspaper explains Reuters, the Irish regulator has already imposed a fine of 1.3 billion euros on Meta if we add up the whole questioning the practices of the multinational. A huge figure especially when you know that Meta has lost a lot of money because of the Metaverse which is a real money pit in research and development. It remains to be seen now whether something will be done to protect the data of European users a little more.
