You have to prepare for a flight with a child. You may also need a travel authorization. Here’s what you need to know, in a nutshell.

Just like adults, children must always be able to identify themselves when traveling by plane. The European Consumer Center (EVZ) points this out. A valid identity card is required for flights within the EU and a valid passport for flights outside the EU. Sometimes the so-called children’s passport is sufficient – parents should find out about this in good time before the trip.

Important: If the child is traveling with an organisation, only one parent with custody or a person other than the legal guardian, a travel authorization is also required for entry into many countries, according to the EVZ.

This should not be missing in the travel authorization

In order to avoid problems when entering the country with the child, the declaration of consent according to the foreign office contain the following information: Personal details of the minor, personal details and accessibility of the legal guardians, the planned travel route and the personal details of the accompanying persons.

Templates for such a travel authorization can be found, for example, on the ADAC website in different languages and for different applications.

The ADAC informs that in some countries, for example in North Macedonia or Greece, the travel authorization for entry must also be officially certified.
