One of the main technological legacies that we carry since the 90’s is the use of chips (SIM) from telephone companies. This custom has dragged on for more than 30 years in the history of smartphones, almost permanently integrating the devices into the small piece of plastic. What has changed, however, is that currently some handset manufacturers are opting for eSIM, a virtual version of the technology.

The use of eSIM’s makes it much easier when changing smartphones and prevents possible loss of the card. A single caveat is that this feature is only available on a few specific cell phone models, with the vast majority being flagships.

Which cell phones sold in Brazil have eSIM?

The technology is limited only to the most powerful devices, so it is not possible to expect compatibility with intermediate and entry-level models.

Samsung

The S line models and the Z line conceptual devices are compatible with the technology, but be careful when activating the mobile plan to execute the whole process correctly. To activate eSIM on Samsung smartphones, a QR Code purchased by the operator is required. After getting it, look for your Galaxy’s connection settings and enter “SIM card management” and add the mobile plan with the code reading option.

Apple

Apple has made the function available since 2018, being one of the first manufacturers to fully adopt the system. To activate the eSIM on iOS, you will need to contact the telephone operator, as you need a specific QR Code for your number.

Motorola

Only Motorola’s foldable concept models support the eSIM system. Activating the eSIM card on Motorola smartphones is the same as on Samsung. As it is an Android, go to the connection settings and look for “Mobile Network”. The handset will require a QR code to be scanned.

Other Manufacturers

There are other smartphone options with eSIM access, but they are inaccessible in Brazil. Google, Huawei, Oppo and Sony have specific models that support the function, but they can only be purchased through import. Currently, Xiaomi does not have any model, whether top of the line, intermediate or entry-level, that has compatibility with eSIM’s.

An important detail to emphasize is that you always need to check in advance if your telephone operator has eSIM availability, as some still do not work with the entirely virtual system.
