Fire Emblem Engage was released last week, successfully continuing Fire Emblem for over three decades. The inconspicuous Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light was released in Japan in 1990 and was particularly famous for the fact that players reached for the reset switch as soon as the first hero fell on the battlefield: the concept of permadeath made the series famous. Hardly any role-playing game dared to do that. Apart from the fact that it began to popularize the sub-genre of the more story-heavy tactical RPG.
Fire Emblem’s permadeath days aren’t numbered – switch to Engage’s Classic mode and you’ll play much more focused again, more on that in the Fire Emblem Engage review – but thanks to friendly gradations, every player can enjoy Engage in their own way . Nintendo delivers a decent slipcase with the game itself in the box, of course. It should be somewhere behind this edition’s exclusive Steelbook case. This adorns the colorful cover of the game with a glossy look that once again brings out the protagonist’s indecisiveness in terms of color in a particularly beautiful way.
As the artwork has always been an important factor for the series, it is also the focus for the following supplements. In the large box you will find a whole bunch of artwork cards that you can use in many ways. Just watching is an option, send it to people you like. Send them to people you don’t like to show off that you have a Divine Edition. Frame them and look at them. Hang them on the fridge and look at them. Yes, a lot of it boils down to looking, because there’s sure to be something else to stoke the fire in the oven.
The beautiful and extensive art book is also intended to be looked at, which can bring you many happy hours of browsing and make you ponder how cool the game would look if you opted for the pixel splendor of a triangle instead of the nice cell shading look Strategy would have decided. A consideration that can permanently haunt you in your room if you strategically place the chic A1 poster.
