Microsoft has issued an End of Support reminder for the regular Windows 10 version 21H2 editions. End of support is scheduled for June 2023, after which this version of Windows will no longer receive security or quality updates.

On June 13, 2023, the Windows 10 Version 21H2 the set “End of Servicing” date to reach. The regular support period will end with the June patch day.

The regular support period describes the time in which Microsoft provides monthly patch day updates and can offer full support. Version 21H2 had recently received the last optional update, so this will soon also affect the security updates.

This applies to the following editions released in November 2021:

  • Windows 10 Home version 21H2
  • Windows 10 Pro, version 21H2
  • Windows 10 Pro for Education, version 21H2
  • Windows 10 Pro for workstations, version 21H2

Microsoft’s standard practice is to first alert users to the end of support multiple times, and then automatically upgrade them to the latest version later if the user’s hardware is also supported by the newer version. An announcement for such a “mandatory update” was published for the first time in April. As part of this announcement, it is also pointed out that you can also switch to Windows 11 right away if the minimum requirements are met.

Microsoft generally does not recommend staying on an unsupported version.

What is a forced update?

This is the practice of automatically importing the new versions to users via the Windows update function. Microsoft has been causing irritation for years – because the “forced updates” are an unwanted intervention for many users and can sometimes lead to problems. This form of “forced update” from an older Windows 10 version to the latest Windows 10 update has been discussed again and again for years. It is always about the versions that are about to no longer receive support from Microsoft.

Microsoft informs users as follows:

“As a reminder, end of maintenance for Windows 10 version 21H2 Home, Pro, Pro Education and Pro for Workstations

On June 13, 2023, the Home, Pro, Pro Education, and Pro for Workstations editions of Windows 10, version 21H2 will reach end of maintenance. The upcoming June 2023 security update, which will be released on June 13, 2023, will be the last update available for these versions. After this date, devices running these versions will no longer receive monthly security and preview updates that provide protection against the latest security threats.

To keep you protected and productive, Windows Update automatically initiates a feature update for Windows 10 consumer and unmanaged corporate devices that have reached or will reach end of maintenance in the next few months. This keeps your device supported and receiving monthly updates important to the security and health of the ecosystem. For these devices, you can choose a convenient time to restart and update.

As always, we recommend that you update your devices to the latest version of Windows 10, or update eligible devices to Windows 11.”

Fast upgrades for more security

Microsoft’s goal is to create as secure a base as possible for the end user, and that only works if fully supported versions of Windows are used. Microsoft had accelerated the update distribution for the previous versions and is therefore trying to get users of older Windows 10 versions to update to the current version quickly. This is now continued in Windows 11.
