Microsoft released an optional update in the Windows 11 Beta Channel. The KB5023008 update mainly brings bug fixes, but also an innovation for administrators who want to preselect how the search field in the taskbar is displayed.

The two builds 22621.1250 and 22623.1250 are now starting in the Windows 11 Insider program. This dichotomy has been in place for a long time, with new functions only being automatically activated for users of the higher build. With update KB5023008, however, both development strands will receive identical updates this time.

The only real innovation in this update will only be launched for administrators, but will be distributed equally to 22621.1250 and 22623.1250. This is about the display of the search field in the taskbar. Microsoft writes:

Search the taskbar

“We’re adding a new policy for IT admins to manage how the search box appears on the taskbar in their organizations.”

Since this is only an optional update for the Insider program so far, the information is not available in the Knowledge Base. Instead, there is an extensive one Changelog in the Windows Blog. A handful of improvements and bug fixes are listed. We have translated the new features and improvements for both builds and added them to the end of the post. If you haven’t joined the beta tests for Windows 11 yet, you can join at any time. This is primarily worthwhile if you can get options that have already been tested via the beta or release preview channel so that you can use them before everyone else.

Fixes for build 22621.1250 and 22623.1250

  • Task Manager:
    • Typing F in the search field should now work again.
    • Fixed an issue where the narrator would not read out part of the text in dialogues.
    • Dragging the window in the search box area should now work (as well as in other areas of the title bar).
    • When you perform a search and then press the down arrow, the keyboard focus should now move from the search box to the results.
    • Fixed an issue where no confirmation dialog was displayed when ending processes in the Details tab.
    • Increasing the text scale should no longer cause a See More button to appear with no content.
    • Fixed an issue where focus would not properly set to search, resulting in Narrator not saying focus was on the search box.
    • If you have a contrast theme enabled and select one of the rows on the Processes page, that row should now appear as selected.
  • Search in the taskbar:
    • Fixed an issue where the search box would randomly disappear when you clicked it (leaving a blank space on the taskbar).
    • Fixed an issue where the search box would shift sideways slightly when clicked.
    • If you have the taskbar set to auto-hide, press the Windows key and start typing, the taskbar should no longer hide unexpectedly.
