While the Windows 11 settings have been expanded to include useful information about the Microsoft 365 account in recent months, the company seems to want to go more and more to catch customers. Anyone who has not yet created a Microsoft account or taken out an Office or cloud storage subscription will soon come across advertising from the Redmond company much more frequently.
The new Settings Start menu as a billboard for Microsoft services
“Home”: Overview of the settings or Microsoft subscriptions?
In the insider versions of the operating system published a few days ago, the leaker came across albacore again on the new “Home” area (engl. Start), which in the future could offer an overview of the most important options within the Settings app. Above all, Microsoft is likely to focus on its own services here – Microsoft 365, OneDrive, Defender and Co. In other words: an advertising board for paid subscriptions. It’s still unclear what useful information will be displayed in the “Home” section of settings for Microsoft 365 customers. Currently, the “Accounts” tab is the central point of contact for finding out about the status of your Microsoft and Xbox subscriptions. However, this step should primarily be about winning more customers for its services and encouraging them to use them. The new start menu notifications, which provide information about possible Office and OneDrive advantages – such as regular backups – are handled in a similar way.
The changes are currently only being tested hidden within the Windows 11 canary version. Whether and especially when the “Home” area will be officially introduced is not yet certain. With appropriate feedback from Windows insiders, Microsoft could also consider reducing advertising to a minimum.
