A Ukrainian sabotage operation in the Bryansk region of Russia has failed. The Russian secret service FSB published photos of four people killed on Monday, who are said to be Ukrainian saboteurs. First reported “ZDF today”.

Even if it is taken for granted that Ukrainian saboteurs are active in Russia, little is known about the scope of these operations. However, their task is to invade Russian territory, cut supply lines and blow up critical infrastructure or military installations.

Such operations are considered extremely dangerous. Now such an action by the Ukrainian army apparently ended fatally.

Military experts rule out false flag action by Russia. Accordingly, the men pictured are said to be a real Ukrainian sabotage team. However, it is unclear to which Ukrainian unit the dead formally belonged. Coats of arms or badges are not visible.

According to Ukrainian media, the group got caught in a minefield and died. The Bryansk region borders Ukraine, where important supply routes from Russia to Belarus pass.

Links to far-right groups

Several indications suggest that the group may have had ties to right-wing and far-right Ukrainian organizations. Yevhen Karas, the leader of the extreme right-wing Ukrainian organization S14, wrote on Telegram that he had known one of the saboteurs for a long time. It was not his first mission.

Aric Toler, the Russia expert at the Bellingcat research platform, wrote on Twitter that other members of the sabotage group also had connections to right-wing Ukrainian organizations.

Accordingly, some of them are said to have had connections to the far-right Bratstvo movement. Similar to Azov, this is said to have had little support in elections, but had great influence in other areas of public life. The Ukrainian armed forces have not yet commented on the incident.

The pictures released by the Russian secret service showed that those killed were carrying C4 military explosives. According to “ZDF Today”, it should be several kilograms of C4 in M112 packaging, as used by NATO forces.

In addition, those killed carried Sig MPX submachine guns made by the German-American manufacturer Sig Sauer. These are not officially used by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. However, private procurement of weapons among Ukrainian troops is currently considered common.

Since February 24, 2022, Ukraine has been defending itself against a full-scale invasion by Russia. After Putin’s army was pushed back in many parts of the neighboring country, the front has been largely frozen for several weeks, partly because of the bad weather.
