After his dismissal at FC Schalke 04 in the summer of 2017, Markus Weinzierl had one or two exciting job offers. In the ‘Club Podcast’ the 47-year-old stated: “I also had good inquiries during this phase. I once rejected Wolfsburg, I could have become the Austrian national coach. I simply turned down two or three things because I was still under contract with Schalke and that wasn’t necessarily resolved in harmony.”

Weinzierl joined VfB Stuttgart in October 2018 instead. The native of Straubing now trains 1. FC Nürnberg. In eight games under his leadership so far, the club has averaged 1.50 points per game. The trainer is currently in eleventh place in the second Bundesliga with the team from Nuremberg.
