Woman pleads guilty to murder of Hollywood consultant Michael Latt

LOS ANGELES.- A woman pleaded guilty to killing Michael Latt, a prominent entertainment industry consultant and social justice advocate.

Jameelah Elena Michl, 36, admitted in a Los Angeles court to having committed murder in the first degree and robbery in the first degree, according to court records. Michl also admitted to using a firearm during the attack, which is a felony.

“He faces a maximum sentence of life in prison, with no chance of parole for 25 years, at his scheduled sentencing on July 10,” prosecutors said.

Latt’s death was felt everywhere Hollywood when it happened in November 2023. He was a consultant whose firm focused on social impact in film and entertainment, and had worked with the director of SelmaAva DuVernay, and the director of Black Panther (Pantera Negra), Ryan Coogler, among many others.

When Latt’s mother, Michelle Satter, founding director of the Sundance Institute, received an honorary scar for her humanitarian work just weeks after the murder, Coogler described her son as Satter’s greatest gift to the world. Satter told the audience that she wanted to share the award with Latt, whom she always led with love.

Prosecutors alleged that Michl knocked on the door of Latt’s Los Angeles home, then forced his way in and fatally shot him with a semi-automatic pistol. He was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

Michl had stalked and threatened director AV Rockwell and attacked Latt because he was Rockwell’s friend. The filmmaker had requested several restraining orders against Michl, according to court records and police.

Rockwell’s last film A Thousand and One (Mil uno)starring Teyana Taylor, earned her a Gotham Award for Best New Director the same night Latt was murdered.

An email seeking comment from an attorney for Michl was sent without a response.
