Writer Paul Auster dies at 77

NEW YORK.- Paul Austerthe prolific writer United States and author of The New York Trilogydied from complications of lung cancer, the newspaper reported this Tuesday – April 30 The New York Times.

Auster was 77 years old and died at his home in Brooklyn, according to the newspaper, which cited journalist Jacki Lyden, a friend of the novelist.

Auster’s cancer diagnosis was first announced last year by his wife and fellow author Siri Hustvedt.

In making this announcement, on August 30, 2023, Hustvedt indicated that Auster had completed a new work titled Baumgartner, a small book that was published in November. “We have not yet reached the sign that marks the border of the country: she is leaving Cancerland,” said the wife. “It is a bigger country than she had imagined,” she added when referring to the illness the author was facing.

Writer’s career

Born in neighboring New Jersey, Auster became a literary icon in the Big Apple during the 1980s thanks to works such as his emblematic The New York Trilogywhich gave a philosophical twist to the police genre.

He also wrote the script for the film Smokewhich portrayed the lost souls who frequent a Brooklyn tobacco shop.

Auster’s often existentialist novels were also very popular in Europe.

Other of his notable creations are The Moon Palace, The Book of Illusions y The Brooklyn Follies.
