What happens when nature strikes back? This question is the focus of the ZDF series highlight “The Swarm”. On Sunday, February 19, 2023, the eight-part thriller series, based on the bestseller of the same name by Frank Schätzing and directed by showrunner Frank Doelger (“Game of Thrones”), celebrated its premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival. In doing so, she opened the “Berlinale Series” section.

From Wednesday, February 22, 2023, 10 a.m., the first three episodes of the series will be available in the ZDF media library. The TV broadcast will start on Monday, March 6, 2023 at 8:15 p.m. in double episodes.

“It was a great privilege and an equally great creative and production challenge to film ‘Der Schwarm’ as a high-end series. I am very pleased with the impressive result, for which ZDF, as the leading broadcaster, knew strong partners at its side It’s a great honor that the series is celebrating its world premiere at the Berlinale,” said ZDF program director Dr. Nadine Bilke.

In various regions of the world, an indefinite danger suddenly seems to be emanating from the sea: whales off the coast of Vancouver Island are hunting people, mussels are blocking ship rudders, mutated bacteria from lobsters and crabs are causing people to die in agony, methane escaping from the seabed is endangering shipping , tsunamis devastate coastal landscapes. A handful of international scientists see a larger connection between the events and put forward a thesis that shakes the very foundations of human civilization: Out there, at great depths, there is intelligent life older and more powerful than humanity, and which is now beginning to fight back.

“Der Schwarm” is flanked in the ZDF program by several documentaries and accompanying offers. For example, “Terra X” documentaries classify the events of the series in a scientifically sound manner and explain how swarm intelligence works. Further documentation shows which solutions researchers and pioneers worldwide have to save the oceans. A film portrays the author Frank Schätzing, the “Masterclass” series of interviews introduces people who have worked in key positions in the thriller series. In the ZDFmediathek, users can experience “#Schwarmstories” with Louisa Dellert and explore the deep sea interactively in an online application.

“The Swarm” was created as an international co-production led by ZDF as part of the European Alliance together with France Télévisions, Rai, ORF, SRF, the Viaplay Group and Hulu Japan, produced by Intaglio Films GmbH (producer: Frank Doelger) and ndF International Production GmbH (producer: Eric Welbers), funded among other things with funds from the German Motion Picture Fund of the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media. ZDF Studios and Beta Film are responsible for international distribution. The editors responsible for ZDF are Frank Zervos, Burkhard Althoff and Alexandra Staib.
