Everything you need to know about the Met Gala 2024

MIAMI.- The most anticipated fashion event for celebrities of the entertainment industry has arrived. This May 6th Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York receives the cream of Hollywood in its traditional Met Galawhich is a traditional charity activity for the museum’s Costume Institute.

76 years after its first edition, the Met Gala is one of the most anticipated events for celebrities and this year, as is tradition, the stars are preparing to break the standards and offer their followers a parade full of luxury, eccentricity and haute couture

Like every year, it takes place on the first Monday in May and this time the theme is Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening of Fashion(Sleeping Beauties: The Reawakening of Fashion), which aims to: “honor the passage of time on historical pieces and their convergence with new technologies, as well as their relationship with nature,” according to Vogue.

Therefore, guests will have The Garden of Time as their dress code, referring to JG Ballard’s story that refers to a garden of translucent flowers that manipulate time. The text was published by the British author in 1962.

In this sense, from May 10 to September 2, the Costume Institute will keep around 250 pieces and accessories from the Met archive on display. Many of these garments are historic and fragile enough to be displayed on mannequins, so the museum agreed to place them in suspended glass coffins.

This alludes to the story Sleeping Beauty.

Information about this edition

Starting at 6:00 pm, Miami time, the Met Gala will begin. However, the artists arrive hours before the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York to walk the red carpet with their unexpected designs, at which time they pose and some share details with the press.

This year, the event will have a group of global hosts: the American actress and singer Zendaya, the Australian actor Chris Hemsworth and representing Latin America the actress and singer Jennifer López and the urban artist Bad Bunny.

Jonathan Anderson, creative director of Loewe, and Shou Zi Chew, CEO of TikTok, are the honorary presidents of this edition; while Vogue editor Anna Wintour has stood out as co-president since 1995.

The opening ceremony of the Costume Institute exhibition will be broadcast on the Vogue website. Afterwards, guests attend a gala dinner and a fashion exhibition.

Invited and banned

The guest list is always a mystery and the only certainty is that there are around 600 people invited.

But although there are many recurring faces at this event, year after year there are those who stop attending due to other commitments or because their invitation is withdrawn.

Ana Wintour confessed that the latter occurs when one of the guests incurs some offense towards the Met Gala or towards her. And in the night talk show by James Corden in 2017 said that one person he will not invite to the event again will be the magnate and former president Donald Trump.

For their part, other celebrities have decided not to return because they did not like the experience, as is the case of Tina Fey who said in 2015: “If you had a million arms, all the people you would want to punch around the world world… they’re all there. I mean I was there, I was clearly one of them,” he commented in Late Show with David Letterman.

Although Gwyneth Paltrow also spoke about the gala and said it was boring, she later appeared in the 2017 and 2019 editions.
