Hollywood Academy announces modifications to the Oscar regulations

MIAMI.- The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that the regulations of its prestigious award underwent some modifications for the delivery of the 97th edition of the scar prizesceremony that will take place on March 2, 2025.

According to a statement issued by the Academiathe premiere of films must necessarily take place in spaces that have traditional theaters for their projection, so the measure of being able to show them in drive-in cinemas is eliminated since this was a resource that was taken during the COVID-19 pandemic. .

It was recalled that feature films that wish to be eligible to compete for the Academy Award must be released between January 1 and December 31, and must spend seven days in the theaters of Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Miami, Atlanta , the Bay Area and Dallas/Fort Worth.

Likewise, those who opt for the best film award must screen it for seven more days, according to the regulations established in 2023, in at least 10 of the 50 most important markets in the United States during the 45 days after its initial release.

Film projects that are released after January 10 of next year must request verification from the Academy.

Changes in categories

The Academy also announced that in the best soundtrack category, up to three individual statuettes will now be awarded to those who make up the working group in this area. Until 2024, the candidates for this award presented themselves as a team and received a single statuette.

In this same sense, animated films that seek to win the statuette for best international film from now on will also be able to participate in the category of best animated film if they meet the requirements of this section.

The films for best international film have a new eligibility period: between November 1, 2023 and September 30, 2024.

In the best adapted script or best original script category, applicants must present a final shooting script.

Finally, the call shortlist (which refers to the candidates for these awards) will go from 15 titles to 20.
