International organizations advocate for guarantees for the independent press

MIAMI. – World Freedom Day Press, By order of the United Nations, it has been celebrated on May 3 since 1993. Regarding this date, different organizations signed the “Declaration of Santiago +30 in Chile on Thursday, May 2.

Through this document, States and technology companies, media and journalists are urged to work to defend freedom of expression and journalism. Within the signed aspects, governments are urged to guarantee the free flow of information and access to public information, support the sustainability of independent journalism and avoid narratives of political polarization.

In the case of the media, the call is to resist the censorship, self-censorship and undue influence; uphold principles of quality and transparency, and create safety protocols for its staff.

The “Santiago +30 Declaration” was signed by the Inter-American Press Association (IAPA); the World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA), the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), and national media associations in eight countries in Latin America and Europe. The organizations presented an update on the “Santiago Declaration” of 1994, which was under the protection of UNESCO.

More freedom in the world

The United Nations indicates that by 2024, World Press Day is aimed at highlighting the importance of journalism and freed of expression in the context of the environmental crisis around the world.

“Journalists face great challenges when it comes to finding and disseminating information on current issues, such as supply chain problems, climate migration, extractive industries, illegal mining, pollution, poaching, animal trafficking, deforestation or climate change. Ensuring the visibility of these issues is crucial to promoting peace and democratic values ​​around the world,” emphasizes the UN.

Organizing for sustainable development requires journalists to convey accurate, timely and comprehensive information “about environmental problems and their consequences, as well as possible solutions.”
