MIAMI.- Entire neighborhoods remain under water in the city of North Miami, one of the most affected by flooding caused by torrential rains in the last three days.
Many neighbors are amazed and comment that it is the first time something like this has happened in the area. “It’s the worst I’ve seen since I’ve lived in North Miami. “This is the first time I have seen the streets flood without a storm or hurricane,” said a neighbor whose yard is completely flooded.
According to the National Weather Center, about 20 inches of precipitation has fallen since Tuesday morning in the North Miami area. This is the equivalent of the rain that was supposed to fall throughout the summer.
On Thursday afternoon, the streets remain impassable and some vehicles are seen abandoned by their owners at the mercy of the water. The interior patios of homes and the garages of some buildings continue to be submerged.
Many of the homes in this neighborhood have septic tanks, some of which are overflowing. Michel, one of the affected neighbors, showed a reporter from the NBC television channel how the water that entered his home is mixed with water from the overflowing tank.
On Wednesday, the county mayor, Daniella Levine Cava, declared a state of emergency due to rain, “as a necessary step to protect the assets of the entire community.”
This Thursday, at a press conference, the mayor warned that the heavy rainfall affecting South Florida will continue until Friday night.
