Prime Minister of Haiti announces his resignation after installation of the Transition Council

PRINCE PORT.- The Presidential Transition Council of Haiti He denounced that the Government of the country modified the decree of formation of the organization, in charge of the political transition of the country, and that these changes “distort the agreed project” between different organizations and political formations.

In that sense, the Transition Council questioned the Government of Ariel Henry for “not respecting commitments” and for “not publishing or even mentioning” several political agreements, such as the one of April 3, 2024.

That is why they are “deeply shocked” and demanded the linking of the bipartisan commissions for the transfer of powers and the installation of the Presidential Council based on the “form and content defined” in the previously agreed upon document.

After that, they recalled that “Henry came to power in exceptional circumstances related to the assassination, on July 7, 2021, of President Jovenel Moise.”

The appointment of the Presidential Council of Haiti gave the starting signal to the transition and will now have the difficult task of restoring constitutional order after the resignation of the prime minister Ariel Henry due to the wave of criminal violence that is plaguing the Caribbean country.

At the beginning of last month, Haitian authorities declared a state of emergency due to the wave of violence registered in the country, especially in the capital, Port-au-Prince, which even led to the assault of prisons and the escape of thousands of prisoners. In this context, one of the country’s great criminal leaders, Jimmy Chérizier, alias ‘Barbecue’, launched an attack against Henry – who was abroad -, whom he threatened to plunge the country into a “civil war” if he did not presented his resignation.

Henry came to power in July 2021, two days before the assassination in 2021 of the then president, Jovenel Moise, which is why he was never sworn into office. In a speech before assuming the leadership of the Government, he called for political unity and a consensus cabinet.
