With 1,080 chapters, One Piece is a huge chunk of a manga. The Netflix series has only covered a fraction of them so far, season 1 only includes 100 of them and there was noticeably shortening and stomping.

At the same time, the creator of the manga, Eiichiro Oda, is far from finished with his manga, even though he is slowly but surely heading towards its end. How many seasons would the Netflix series have to deliver in order to do justice to the massive template?

How many seasons the makers of the Netflix series are hoping for

One Piece producers Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements spoke about this in a new interview Deadline entertain. The two reveal: They are planning six seasons for the Netflix series, but are even hoping for 12:

The manga currently has over 1,080 chapters. We’ve been making plans with (showrunner) Matt Owens about how we’re going to split this up into multiple seasons, and I think if we get to six seasons, we’ll only be able to cover half of the manga. It could go on and on.

But will One Piece even be renewed? Despite the impressive success of One Piece on Netflix, a season 2 is not guaranteed and is not officially confirmed at this point. After all, One Piece has become one of the most expensive TV series ever at $18 million and this investment has to pay off for Netflix in the long term.

In an interview with Deadline, Clements and Adelstein reveal that they have at least already discussed further seasons with Netflix:

Everything we do is in coordination with Netflix, (the manga publisher) Shueisha and Oda-San. (…) We’ve definitely had heartfelt conversations about what we would do in the second season if we had the opportunity and less detailed conversations about where we want to go with seasons three to six. I would say that we definitely agree on which parts of the manga we definitely can’t throw out and which are also important to the fans. (…) This will still take a lot of discussions, but we are happy to already have a roadmap.
