The closure of the north-south tunnel of the Berlin S-Bahn ends as planned on Friday evening. Lines S1, S2, S25 and S26 can then run regularly through the capital again from 10 p.m., as Deutsche Bahn, the operator of the Berlin S-Bahn, announced on Tuesday.

During the renovation, 9,100 meters of rails were replaced, 18,400 meters of rails were ground, 17 switches were repaired and 200 sleepers were renewed. In addition, the stations along the route were thoroughly cleaned. The modernizations in the tunnel are carried out annually – according to Deutsche Bahn, the maintenance cost 13 million euros this time.

After the Ringbahn and the Stadtbahn, the north-south connection is the most important S-Bahn route in the capital. For the modernization, the tunnel was initially closed between Südkreuz/Yorckstraße (Großgörschenstraße) and Nordbahnhof, since January 27 the closure has applied to Gesundbrunnen. (dpa)
