1&1 starts at the end of the year with a landline alternative via 5G mobile communications. The new tariffs are called “5G at home” and can be booked immediately. However, customers have to make do with relatively little data volume.

The company has now announced this. Similar to the offers of other providers, 1&1 now also has a “DSL replacement” that is implemented via the 5G mobile network. Although this guarantees fast transmission speeds even where no DSL, fiber optic or cable connection is available, it also comes at a high price.

As a result, the connection via 5G is certainly more of an alternative for users who can get by with little data.

The so-called Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) is up to 500 Mbit/s fast and has WLAN and home networking. The upload is limited to 40 Mbit/s. There are three tariffs to choose from. After the inclusive volume has been reached, it will be throttled – then 5G at home will only be 384 kBit/s. It’s not ideal, but there are certainly users who can come to terms with it.

5G at home is now starting in the first regions of Germany. Availability is expected to increase in the coming weeks. You can find out more about this on the provider’s website.

At the same time, 1&1 is currently building the most modern 5G mobile network in Europe, based on OpenRAN technology. The first antennas have now been put into operation in Frankfurt (Main) and Karlsruhe.
