A suspected right-wing terrorist from Potsdam, whose trial fell through because a lay judge was ill, must remain in custody. This was decided by the 1st Criminal Division of the Higher Regional Court on Wednesday, a spokeswoman for the authorities said on request. The process has to be reopened because the judge was ill for more than three weeks. The district court now has to set appointments for the new hearing more quickly because the detention is ongoing.

The procedure had been conducted behind closed doors since mid-February because the 18-year-old was a minor at the alleged time of the crime. The Brandenburg Public Prosecutor’s Office had brought charges against him. The German, classified as a threat, is suspected of having planned a bomb attack. At the beginning of June last year, the suspect was taken into custody.

The young man from Potsdam is said to have obtained instructions for the construction of weapons, ammunition and explosive devices and also made his first attempts at explosives. Instructions for this were secured during searches. The crimes are said to have a right-wing extremist background. According to a statement from the authorities in the summer, the suspect tried to promote a “revolution against the system” in social media, especially among young people. (dpa)
