Juarez City.- Of 107 hit-and-runs that have occurred during 2023, 19 have ended in death for the pedestrian, said the head of the General Coordination of Road Safety (CGSV), César Alberto Tapia Martínez.

The head of the municipal agency said that this is “unfortunate, because in many of them the pedestrians have been to blame” who refuse to go up the steps of the existing pedestrian bridges, or to wait for a green traffic light to be able to cross together with the flow of cars.

“I know that we are all in a hurry, but it is better to wait a few minutes, so that they arrive safely at their destination,” said the municipal official.

Tapia Martínez recalled that the coordination under his charge has carried out awareness campaigns since its inception so that both pedestrians and motorists travel responsibly, and given that road accidents with fatalities continue, so will the campaigns.

The last case of a fatality from a run over occurred on Wednesday, April 19, in which a man died after being run over and his body dragged several meters by a personnel transport unit.

The accident occurred when the man tried to run across the Independencia bypass and Santiago Troncoso street around 6:00 in the morning, when he was run over by a personnel transport truck with the economic number 11042, without license plates.

In this particular case, despite the recklessness of the pedestrian, the responsibility of the driver was also addressed, since he was speeding, according to the official part of the CGSV.

Previously, on April 18, a man died after being run over by a flatbed truck labeled Galaz.

This case occurred in the Airport bypass, between Independencia boulevard and De las Torres avenue. The victim was a man in his 40s.

There are no pedestrian bridges in the area and there are only two traffic lights on the stretch of Santiago Troncoso avenue to De las Torres, according to what was observed on a tour. Passers-by interviewed by this means have previously indicated that pedestrian bridges, signage and the presence of Road Safety elements are necessary.
