More than 200 young neurologists from Romania were brought together in two major academic events in the field of neurological scientific research – the 18th International Summer School of Neurology and the 13th European Neurorehabilitation Course – in in which they interacted with some of the world-renowned experts of the moment in the vast medical field of neurology (19 professors and scientific researchers from Germany, Italy, Israel and Romania).

The scientific events took place simultaneously, physically and in the online environment, and brought to the audience the latest novelties emerging worldwide in neurology, especially in the treatment of conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, migraine or vertigo syndrome. A distinct topic was the approach to the concept of neurobiological reserve in the recovery of neurological patients, one of the profound themes of scientific research in modern neurology.

The double scientific event was organized by the Foundation of the Society for the Study of Neuroprotection and Neuroplasticity (SSNN) together with the Romanian Society of Neurology (SNR) and the Romanian Academy of Medical Sciences, as well as an international consortium of universities, under the auspices of the European Federation of Societies of Neurorehabilitation (EFNR) and the World Federation of Neurorehabilitation (WFNR).

“If recently, in Lyon, during the 7th edition of the European Congress of Neurorehabilitation, we discussed, together with world-renowned experts, the most recent and challenging scientific discoveries in the field of neurorehabilitation, naturally those conclusions they had to be exposed to our young neurologists, which is why the majority of the International Summer School of Neurology focused on the latest scientific research presented in France, but also on topics of major interest in the neurorecovery of patients with various disabilities caused by certain neurological conditions. I am convinced that the added value added on this occasion to the skills of young Romanian doctors will be found in the clinical area and implicitly for the benefit of patients in various stages of treatment” declared the university professor. Dr. Dafin Mureșanu, president of the European Federation of Neurorehabilitation Societies (The European Federation of NeuroRehabilitation Societies – EFNR) and one of the most respected experts in neurorehabilitation internationally.

New approaches in Parkinson’s disease, vertigo and migraine

In the event, recently concluded, from Poiana Brașov, medical topics were also discussed regarding new approaches to diagnosis and treatment in conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, migraine or vertigo syndrome, as well as effective methods regarding the prevention of these diseases.

And it must be remembered that after more than 200 years since its description by Dr. James Parkinson, Parkinson’s disease is still not curable, being one of the most representative degenerative neurological conditions recorded worldwide, second in frequency after the disease Alzheimer’s.

Parkinson’s disease today it affects approximately 6.3 million people worldwide, 1.5 million being Europeans, of which over 70,000 are from Romania. Moreover, according to studies, Parkinson’s disease may double the number of patients by 2030.

At the same time, vertigo, dizziness or vertigo syndrome it is one of the most common ailments in the family doctor’s office and is the number one cause of accidental death, occupying the same first place in the development of depression, but also in the generation of low quality of life.

According to studies, 8 out of 10 patients with vertigo end up in a situation of interruption of activities and require medical leave, and the main cause of the onset of this serious health problem is cranio-cerebral trauma, causing at the same time a very large impact from an emotional point of view, but also economically, with a high degree of disability.

It should be added that vertigo affects more than 35% of the population over the age of 65. Another cause that can lead to the appearance of the veritiginous syndrome is migraine, a pathology that greatly prevents the performance of daily activities in optimal conditions is a suffering that, unfortunately, is found in 1 in 8 people, globally.

Studies have confirmed that approximately 40% of people with migraine also complain of dizziness, and most migraine sufferers report vertigo as a symptom associated with their attacks. When migraines are constantly associated with vertigo, the doctor can diagnose vestibular migraine, which can improve with specific drug treatment.

The European Federation of NeuroRehabilitation Societies is an international non-profit scientific organization dedicated to research, education, intellectual exchange, advocacy and philanthropic activities in the medical field of neurorehabilitation and related areas of expertise. With its permanent headquarters in Vienna, EFNR has in its composition members from all the countries of the European Union, to which are added other specialists and scientific researchers in the field of neurology from all over the world.

The World Federation for NeuroRehabilitation-WFNR. Established in 1996, the WFNR is a UK-based multidisciplinary organization open to all professionals worldwide involved in the field of neurorehabilitation. WFNR currently has over 5,000 members worldwide, 38 special interest groups and 41 National Societies affiliates from different countries

The Society for the Study of Neuroprotection and Neuroplasticity (SSNN) was founded in 2005 by an international group of doctors and researchers, at the initiative of Prof. Dr. Dafin F. Mureşanu, from the “Iuliu Hațieganu” University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Cluj-Napoca , Prof. Dr. Ovidiu Băjenaru and Prof. dr. Bogdan Popescu from the “Carol Davila” University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest. SSNN is a scientific organization dedicated to fundamental and clinical research, the creation of a discussion forum to contribute to a better understanding of endogenous neurobiological processes and the development of pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapeutic strategies in the field of neuroprotection and neuroregeneration.
