During some of these years there has been no or very little license hunting of wolves. Then the number of wolves killed in protective hunting increased. The clearest examples are the years when there was no license hunting at all.

In 2012, 2014, 2019 and 2020, no license hunting was conducted. Then a total of 76 wolves were shot in protective hunting. In 2013, license hunting was stopped by the EU after three wolves were killed. Then instead 20 wolves were shot in protective hunting.

This means that half of all wolves killed during protected hunting did so in the years when there was no licensed hunting.

In total, 676 wolves have died or been killed between 1977 and December 15, 2022, according to Predator base.

In addition to hunting, 117 wolves have died after being hit by either a car or train. 31 wolves have been euthanized while 30 wolves have died of unknown causes. Illegal hunting is behind 16 confirmed deaths, but here there is a dark figure. Other wolves have died for other reasons.
