Be the guest of your neighbors on Sunday: As part of the “Open Gardens” series of events, the gardeners invite curious people and plant and garden fans of all ages throughout the year to visit their green paradises and exchange ideas. At the weekend it is time again: “Private gardens in Berlin and Brandenburg are involvedso do we at Schütte-Lanz-Strasse 50 in Lichterfelde,” writes the Moritz family to the Tagesspiegel newsletter for Steglitz-Zehlendorfwhere the garden party promptly became the “tip of the week”.

Over 60 gardens will be able to be admired – including five in Steglitz-Zehlendorf, all of which will be open on Sunday, May 14, between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Here is the quick overview:

1 The terraced garden

In Schlachtensee, Katarina Henkys shows her “multifunctional terraced house garden, whose sophisticated architecture offers everything you could wish for in a garden in the smallest of spaces: a green retreat with space for family life, friends and celebrations, and the enjoyment of plants over the course of the seasons is not neglected either”. Coffee and crepes are offered. (Garden number 61, Matterhornstraße 76a).

2 The barrier-free garden

Actually, there are even three gardens that are shown in Zehlendorf: The towers over the “summer garden” with lawns and rose beds 100-year-old copper beech on. The natural “sensory garden” is completely different; in the “bed garden”, on the other hand, small berry bushes, a herb spiral, the fragrance bar and raised beds characterize the picture. “Here you can also garden from a wheelchair – a group, many of whom live with disabilities, take care of them all year round, from sowing to harvest.” Art objects are distributed in the gardens. Visitors can fortify themselves in the “Wintergarten” bistro. (Garden number 63, Villa Donnersmarck, Schädestraße 9-13)

3 The rose garden

Over 40 varieties of roses “of all growth forms, mainly English and Rambler roses” thrive in this Zehlendorf gem. The tea pavilion and the swimming pond show that the life of the residents also takes place in the countryside. Speaking of water, there is more of it: a stream has been created, a granite fountain has been set up. The “black water basin with spring fountains” and a mirror pond round off the interplay of the elements. At 2 p.m., the house community leads through the garden, which is largely wheelchair accessible. You are welcome to bring your own picnic. (Garden number 64, Rosengarten Bischoff, Prinz-Handjery-Straße 32A).

4 The artist garden

The home and garden duo formed by Angela Haese and Andreas Schäfer has two great passions: roses and porcelain. In your old garden in Lichterfelde, in addition to numerous fruit trees, there are “about 40 different types of roses, including many early flowering wild roses, old rose varieties and robust modern roses”. Passion number two will also be on display at the weekend: in an exhibition Angela Haese her handmade porcelain vessels. Very important: Dogs are not allowed in the garden. (Garden number 65, rose garden by Angela Haese and Andreas Schäfer, Dahlemer Weg 137)

5 The family garden

In Lichterfelde, Andrea and Ralf Moritz have created a true feel-good space: A swimming pond, rhododendrons, columbines, allium, knotweed, campanula and campanula can be found on 800 square meters. “Accentuated fruit trees offer enough shade in summer to relax and have a coffee,” write the owners. “Art objects that can be found with interested eyes round off the overall picture.” That fits the picture: visitors will cake, coffee and tea offered, the garden can also be explored with a wheelchair. One thing is not desired: Please leave your dog in front of the garden gate. (Garden number 66, home garden of Andrea and Ralf Moritz, Schütte-Lanz-Strasse 50).

Of course, the offer of the “Open Gardens” extends far beyond the south-west of Berlin. The excursion tips range from the art garden in Woldegk to the waterfront property in Wandlitz to the perennial garden in Spandau and the cottage garden according to Feng Shui in Lehnin Monastery. The entire garden offer can be found on the website urania-potsdam.de. To get into the gardens, you have to buy an annual badge for 5 euros once in the first garden – then the garden gates are open to you all year round.
