The submarine U17 reached NRW on the Rhine on Friday morning. First stop: Duisburg. Where there is the best view of the spectacular submarine.

Spectacular visit to NRW: The historic submarine U17 is on its way from Rotterdam to Speyer, passes the Kleve and Wesel districts on the Rhine and stops in Duisburg on Friday. Early on Friday evening, around 4:30 p.m., the pushed convoy with the 500-ton colossus is due to dock at Mercator Island in Duisburg. The stations according to the itinerary www.technik-museum.de/de/u17 until then (status: Friday, 8.30 a.m.):

  • 9 clock: Driving past the Emmerich Rhine promenade
  • 10.30 a.m: Driving past the Rhine promenade Rees
  • 12 o’clock: Driving past the Rhine promenade Wesel
  • 16.30 o’clock: Arrival in Duisburg
  • Saturday, 6 a.m: Departure in Duisburg
  • Saturday, 5:30 p.m: Arrival in Cologne

The journey of the disused Bundeswehr submarine takes a total of six days. On Thursday U17 leaves the port of Dordrecht, just before Rotterdam, and spends the first night in Nijmegen. Duisburg on Friday is the second stop. According to the Technik Museum Speyer, where U17 is to be exhibited in the future, arrival is expected around 4:30 p.m.

Submarine U17 stays at the Mercator Island in Duisburg

Anyone who wants to follow the arrival and marvel at the submarine has the best view from the Friedrich-Ebert Bridge, which connects Ruhrort with Homberg. The observation deck offers an excellent view of Mercator Island. A staircase also leads down from there, so that you can easily follow the U17 to the pier. Tip: There are parking spaces on both sides at the Ruhrort end of the Friedrich-Ebert Bridge.


According to the Port of Duisburg, the association will moor at the berth for cruise ships, so that there should also be a good view from the Ruhrorter Ufer.

The departure is on Saturday early in the morning – the transport is to set off at 6 a.m. and continue up the Rhine. The U17s then spend the night from Saturday to Sunday in Cologne. Further stations are Lahnstein, Mainz and Mannheim; arrival in Speyer is scheduled for May 17th.

U17 was built at the Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW) in Kiel, after its christening in 1972 it was in service with the German Navy until 2010. The special: During a training program, it was the first German post-war submarine to cross the Atlantic and anchored in Baltimore, where a German submarine last docked in 1916. Since its decommissioning, the submarine had been in the naval arsenal in Wilhelmshaven.
