Five County Bike Tour Returns Sunday

The Five County Bike Tour returns to the city this Sunday.

On May 5, the 46th edition of the Five Boro Bike Tour will be held in the city.

Less than a year after the New York Marathon became a five-borough course, the city’s cyclists decided to do their own version of the idea.

More than thirty thousand cyclists are expected to enjoy 40 miles of car-free roads.

Riders will begin their ride at 7:30 am in Lower Manhattan, passing through Central Park and arriving in The Bronx.

All cyclists will leave before 10.30.

Then, they return to the Queensboro Bridge towards Long Island City, passing through Queens and down the BQE to Gowanus before passing over the Verrazzano Bridge to end in Staten Island.

The time needed to complete the ride depends on the bike and experience level. Most cyclists take between three and five hours.

Drivers should expect significant road closures today and tomorrow along the route.

Cyclists had to register in advance.

It is the world’s largest charity bike ride, with proceeds funding free cycling-related educational programs.

The first Five Boro Bike Tour took place in 1977, with only about 200-250 participants.

Today, more than 32,000 cyclists participate in what organizers say is more of a community than a competition.

At the end of the finish line, the Finish Festival is held in Fort Wadsworth, Staten Island.

Participants enjoy live music, food trucks and photos.
