26 horses die after a fire in a stable in Georgia

A stable fire in rural Georgia claimed the lives of 26 horses on Sunday, authorities said.

The Forsyth County Fire Department said the fire had already swept through the horses and their homes, a series of stalls in the stable, when first responders arrived.

“The fire was well advanced and it was determined that the fire had been burning for an extended period of time before it was discovered by the first 911 callers,” the department said in a statement.

No human damage was reported.

The address is for Blue Springs Farm, a facility that provides training for equestrian competitions, hosts equestrian summer camps, and offers boarding for horses, according to their website.

It has 32 stables, the site says. A director of the facility did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

While the firefighters were on their way, they received several calls confirming the existence of a fire at the location. According to firefighters, when they arrived at the scene, the fire was already raging.

“The crew came across a completely damaged barn containing several horse stables.

Firefighters took a defensive stance until the fire reduced the structure to ashes.

“26 horses that were housed on the premises were lost in the fire. The stable itself is also a total loss.”

The cause of the fire was being investigated.
