We would like to inform you about the app for two-factor authentication called 2FAS. But first, to catch up on what two-factor authentication (2FA for short) even is: 2FA with a code via an authenticator app is a security measure that prevents someone else from accessing your online account, even if they do he knows the password.

This means you need two things to log in: your username and password combination, and a temporary code that an app spits out. There are various authenticator apps, such as B. the Google Authenticator or the Microsoft Authenticator, which can be connected to various online services. Many password managers now also offer this function, so you can get everything from a single source.

To use an authenticator app, users must first download it on their smartphone and then link it to their online account by scanning a QR code or entering a key. After that, they have to enter the code from the app in addition to their password when registering. This makes an account more secure because an attacker needs both the password and the smartphone to log in.

I have already mentioned authenticator apps here as examples, but over the years we have presented numerous others (including Authy). Also mentioned: Some password managers also offer 2FA management (e.g. 1Password or Bitwarden). However, many users separate this, because if you have the 2FA codes generated in the password manager in addition to user names and passwords, you will have a problem if the password manager is successfully attacked.

2FAS is an app for generating these codes, also known as one-time passwords (OTP). I mention them because they are not only for freefor …. As well iOS and Android is to have. The developer also has them up to date to open-source made. If you are not yet using an app for 2FA, or are looking for an alternative to the one you are currently using, you can take a look at 2FAS.

I think the app is clear and well designed. It is easy to use and also offers self-definable symbols for the accounts set up. Data can be saved in your memory, there is also an import and export function for your accounts. Users can also find one browser extension before and yourself widgets can be used for quick access to the codes.

Offtopic on the use and discussion of the terms authentication and authentication. The terms authentication and authentication are often used synonymously in general usage, but describe different sub-processes, e.g. B. a registration process. A user AUTHENTICATES themselves to a system using unique login information (e.g. password or chip card). The system then checks the validity of the data used and AUTHENTICS the user. (see BSI)
