Peking. A 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck northeast China on Sunday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), injuring at least 10 people and collapsing dozens of buildings.
Locals posted videos on social media of lamps swinging from the ceiling, the ground shaking or people evacuating their homes, and even people walking through rubble on the ground.
The tremor occurred at 2:33 a.m. local time, 26 kilometers south of the city of Dezhou, in Shandong province, at a depth of 10 kilometers, the USGS said.
“During the earthquake, my head was shaking on the pillow, I thought I was having a nightmare,” wrote a Weibo user.
The state agency CCTV, citing the Shandong authorities, reported that there were at least “10 injured” and 74 houses or buildings “collapsed” after the quake, which was followed by 52 aftershocks.
The tremor was also felt in the cities of Beijing and Shanghai, about 800 kilometers from the epicenter.
Earthquakes are common in China, but rarely occur in the east of the country, where most of the population and most large cities are located.
