RSF warns of political pressures and poor protection for Palestinian journalists

Governments around the world are putting increasing pressure on journalists, curtailing press freedom on a global scale, according to Reporters Without Borders (RSF), which criticizes the international community for not doing enough to protect Gaza journalistswhere more than a hundred have already died.

In its 2024 annual classification, which evaluates the situation in 180 countries, released this Friday on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, RSF confirms that only 25% of the countries analyzed have a “satisfactory” or “good” situation, the majority European (The first are, in this order, Norway, Denmark and Sweden, while Spain is in 30th place, after improving by six).

“RSF observes a worrying deterioration of support and respect for the autonomy of the media and a worsening of the pressures exerted by States or by other political actors,” denounces the report, which takes into account five grade criteria, including political, which overall drops 7.6 points.

In USAone of the oldest democracies in the world, RSF explains the drop of 10 placesup to 55th place (“problematic” grade, the third of five), due to the pre-campaign situation in view of the presidential elections of November 2024in which Donald Trump – hostile to the traditional press – could regain power.
