We have already said it: 2023 will be a great year for moviegoers. The year has some great nuggets in store for us and we’re starting with babylon. Damien Chazelle is determined to start the year with a bang with his new feature film which will be released on January 18th. While waiting for our review, we give you five reasons to reserve your seat to see babylon in the dark room nearest to you.
1) A proven director
Five years after his last feature film, Damien Chazelle is back. If his name may not mean anything to you, the director has already offered us two major nuggets: La La Land in 2016 and whiplash in 2014. Musically and visually, the two feature films had blown us away and they had found their audience.
Even better: they have won award after award at various ceremonies including, in particular, six Oscars for La La Land and three for whiplash. Damien Chazelle knows his score well and should not disappoint us.
2) A cast that shines brightly
For his nugget which stands out as the project of a lifetime, Damien Chazelle did not hesitate to call on two of the greatest actors of the moment. Thus, we find Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie at the top of the bill babylon. But they are not alone! Indeed, they share the poster with Diego Calva that we could see in Narcos: Mexico.
In distribution, we also find Jean Smart (24 hour clock ; Fargo ; watch men), Toby Maguire (our dear Peter Parker in the trilogy Spiderman by Sam Raimi), Li Jun Li (Quantico) or even Max Minghella (The Social Network ; The Handmaid’s Tale). Beautiful people who should give life to babylon in the most beautiful way.
3) A love letter to Hollywood
But let’s get to the heart of the matter: what is it about? babylon ? Damien Chazelle invites us to discover Hollywood as we have never seen it before. We are in the 1920s, when cinema is at a crucial turning point in its history. We follow two young people, ready to conquer the world and Hollywood, as well as a renowned actor. All excesses are allowed so hang on!
With such a synopsis, Damien Chazelle promises us a true love letter to Hollywood and cinema in general. Cinephiles, it is certain that you will love babylon.
4) A promising soundtrack
Another argument and not the least: it is Justin Hurwitz who is in charge of the soundtrack of babylon. The composer works regularly, let’s even say systematically, with Damien Chazelle. It is therefore he who hides behind the musical jewel that is La La Land or whiplash. 20 years oblige, babylon is a marvel if you like jazz.

5) He is already acclaimed by all
Released only in cinemas across the Atlantic, babylon has already had its small effect on our American friends. The film is already acclaimed by all with five nominations for the Golden Globes, nine nominations for the Critics Choice Awards and should be in the running to win a few Oscars in passing.
