Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) has officially declared the end of the corona pandemic, and the State Office for Refugee Affairs (LAF) has now closed the quarantine station in French-Buchholz (Pankow). This was announced by the LAF.

Since April 2020, a total of 5565 refugees have been taken in there by Albatros gGmbH, 3340 of whom had tested positive for the corona virus. In cooperation with the Pankow health department, more than 3100 PCR swabs were taken. More than 30 percent of the tests gave a positive result.

Many aspects of the disease were initially unknown

At the beginning of the station, the LAF reports, “many aspects, such as infection routes or vaccinations, had not yet been clarified. At that time, the LAF decided to open the station so as not to have to quarantine entire accommodations. ”Nevertheless, some residents were housed there several times.

LAF President Carina Harms said of the station’s balance sheet: “Despite the initial ignorance about the disease, the Albatros colleagues have done their work with full commitment and passion from day one. It is particularly gratifying that there were no fatalities during the entire period.”

Friedrich Kiesinger, Managing Director of Albatross, explained: “The whole team has done a remarkable job and supported people in great need professionally and empathetically. Those in need of special protection, such as people with severe disabilities, traumatized people, the blind or deaf or unaccompanied seniors were supported by social workers, doctors and psychologists in shift work.” The accommodation in French-Buchholz will now continue to be used as a reception facility for asylum seekers.
